Welcome to The Hamelin Project Research Journal, documenting historical research, archives, translations and discoveries.
Every research project begins somewhere.
Sometimes it begins with a question. Sometimes with an old book, a forgotten letter, or a passing curiosity that refuses to disappear.
This journal is a place to record that journey.
Here I'll be sharing the day-to-day reality of researching the history behind the Pied Piper of Hamelin: archive visits, newly discovered sources, translations, books, unexpected connections, and occasionally the inevitable dead ends that form part of every genuine piece of historical research.
Not every entry will contain a dramatic discovery, and that's perfectly all right. Historical research is rarely a straight line. More often, it's a gradual process of following evidence, asking better questions, and allowing each source to point towards the next.
Along the way, I'll also be writing about the wider process of research itself — the challenges of working across languages and countries, the value of original sources, the importance of careful scholarship, and the small moments of excitement that make the search worthwhile.
